All funeral homes and funeral directors must comply with the Health (Burial) Regulations 1946.
The 2024/2025 fee for a funeral director certificate of registration is $396. If you are registering as a funeral director with no mortuary, the fee is $229.
Licences need to be renewed every year from 1 July to 30 June. If you are currently registered, you will automatically be sent a renewal invoice.
Before opening a new funeral parlour or mortuary, or taking over an existing one, email healthadmin@ccc.govt.nz to discuss your plans. Mortuaries and funeral director businesses require registration and inspection and our Environmental Health Officer can assist you with any information requirements or undertake inspections at any stage of the development.
Mortuaries must comply with the Health (Registration of Premises) Regulation 1966(external link) and funeral directors must comply with the Health (Burial) Regulations 1946(external link).
