You are required to register any demonstration in a council-owned public place.

When organising a demonstration in a Council-owned public place, we require the organisers to register their intention to demonstrate with the Council. This is to ensure we have an awareness of what is planned across the city and to ensure public enjoyment of these spaces for all.

Register your demonstration

Please provide the information requested below to CSandTriage@ccc.govt.nz.

Registration should be at least 5 working days before the demonstration starts. If you need more information about registering for your demonstration contact us at 03 941 8999.

Please note that overnight occupation of public spaces is not permitted.

When you register, we will need you to include the following information:

  • Name and contact details of demonstration organisers.
  • The matter the demonstration is about.
  • The date and time of the demonstration.
  • A simple map of the proposed route and/or assembly places.
  • The expected numbers.
  • The likely types of noise generated, such as chanting and amplified noise.
  • Any structures, such as gazebos.
  • All other proposed activities.

The Council is mindful of the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. However, we also need to manage these activities so that they do not infringe on the public’s freedom of movement by preventing them from using a road or other public space.
