Enhance your emergency preparedness in Ōtautahi Christchurch with our talks and workshops.

Emergency management and personal preparedness

This talk aims to firstly address the question 'What does Civil Defence actually do?'. We provide an overview of our structure and our role both during and outside of emergencies.

Your personal preparedness plays a pivotal role in emergencies. By understanding the bigger picture you'll be better able to prepare yourselves and whānau for when an emergency strikes. We cover the top hazards and risks we face, focusing on practical tips to better prepare yourself.

Earthquakes and the Alpine Fault (AF8 Project)

While we can’t predict earthquakes, scientific research indicates there is a 75% probability of an Alpine Fault earthquake occurring in the next 50 years, and there is a four out of five chance that it will be a magnitude 8+ event. The impacts of an Alpine Fault rupture will be felt in Ōtautahi Christchurch, learn about these potential specific impacts to our city, what to do during an Earthquake, and how you can play a pivotal role in community recovery.

Flooding and adverse weather

The most frequent emergency to impact our City is adverse weather; flooding, heavy rain, storms, high winds and snowfall. Each of these events poses a risk to our people and infrastructure. We will experience more of these events per year as a result of Climate Change so we need to know now how to look after one another and adapt to the consequences of these events.

Tsunamis

Do you know your zone? Find out if you live in a Tsunami inundation zone and what that means for you. Better understand the type of Tsunami risk that Ōtautahi Christchurch faces and why you need to be aware of natural warning signs and have an evacuation plan in place.

Community response planning

This workshop is aimed at supporting your community group or organisation to plan what actions you could take during or after an emergency. The interactive workshop will get you thinking about what resources you already have within your community, how you can use them, and who else you can connect to for further support.
