As a community, our cemeteries are an expression of the respect we show to those who have gone before.
They are to be places of contemplation, of serenity and prayer, of respect for our history and the stories of our people. They are places to come to grieve, to remember and to give thanks.
Apply for burial or interment
Applications need to be received with no fewer than one working day's notice (Monday to Friday) for Christchurch City cemeteries and no fewer than two working days' notice for Banks Peninsula cemeteries.
Alternatively, you can download and complete an Application for Interment form [PDF, 23 KB].
Instructions for next of kin to arrange ash interments
Families are able to arrange the interment of ashes, directly with Council. If the ashes are to be interred into an existing plot, families can complete the attached form and submit to the Cemeteries team. If ashes are to be interred and a plot hasn't been purchased, please contact the Cemeteries team to arrange a plot purchase.
Families can elect for the Cemetery Sexton to select a plot for them or families may select the plot themselves. To select a plot families should contact the Cemeteries team to arrange an appointment to meet with the Cemetery Sexton at the Cemetery. The Application for Plot Purchase is done at the Cemetery and forwarded to the Council for processing. Council does not offer a payment plan for plot purchases.
