Situated at 14-16 Wakefield Avenue, Sumner, this centre has a large hall with a stage, two meeting rooms and is available to hire for a range of dance, education and workshop events.

Please note that the Pariroa Room is currently closed for bookings until further notice.

Availability and access

Hours of hire

  • Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre rooms are available for hire Monday to Sunday, 8am to midnight.
  • Allow at least 60 days’ notice when booking rooms for displays and shows.

 Familiarisation tour

  • A staff member can provide a familiarisation tour.
  • Call 03 941 8999 to arrange this.

 Access

  • This centre has wheelchair access and wheelchair-accessible toilets. Wheelchair access is via the entrance off Nayland Street.
  • There are on-site car parks at 33–35 Nayland Street.
  • Off-street parking is also available.

Pricing

The below pricing takes effect from 1 July 2024.

Puoro-nuku (Main Hall) hire

  • $18.00 per hour for not-for-profit community groups where the booking is for community benefit and does not charge attendees.
  • $33.00 per hour for not-for-profit community groups where the booking is for a community group and charges fees or takes payment.
  • $90.00 per hour for commercial, business, private or celebration hire. This includes auctions, meetings, birthdays, weddings, private events, funerals etc.

Puoro-raki and Pariroa hire

  • $16.00 per hour for not-for-profit community groups where the booking is for community benefit and does not charge attendees.
  • $25.00 per hour for not-for-profit community groups where the booking is for a community group and charges fees or takes payment.
  • $40.00 per hour for commercial, business, private or celebration hire. This includes auctions, meetings, birthdays, weddings, private events, funerals etc.

Cleaning fees

  • Puoro-nuku (Main Hall) and Puoro-raki (Activity 1) if included in Hall hire: $140.00
  • 1st floor including Common Space and Pariroa (Activity 2) if included in Hall hire and Activity 1: $175.00 
  • Ground floor Common Space if included in 1st floor hire: $70.00
  • Additional cleaning charges may apply if required.

General fees

  • Cost recovery up to $88 for after-hours building inspection and security charge for bookings where the hire is:
    • Booked after 6pm Monday to Friday for 4 hours and longer.
    • Booked after 5pm Saturday, Sunday or Public Holiday for 4 hours and longer.
    • At the discretion of Council staff and not limited to the events above.
  • $60.00 replacement charge for lost or damaged keys/access cards.

A security guard will be present from the last hour of the hire to ensure the hirer adheres to the terms and conditions of hire and has made good the community space to the required standard.

  • Free library provided wifi is available
  • All users are required to supply their own HDMI cables for use with screens

Health and safety

  • As part of the rental agreement, you accept legal responsibility to meet evacuation plans, health and safety responsibilities and to act as the facility warden.
  • All users are required to complete a pre-use form. These must then be signed, dated and left in the dropbox in the foyer of the centre.

Alcohol

  • The consumption of alcohol is permitted in this facility.
  • In general, bringing your own alcohol (BYO) is permitted at private functions such as weddings or birthdays.
  • A special alcohol licence may be required if alcohol is part of your event, or if you are selling alcohol. Find out more about special alcohol licencing for events. Applications for special licences must be made with the alcohol licencing team at least 20 working days before the date of your event.
  • Regardless of whether your event requires a special licence or not you still have the responsibility to ensure that you are providing a safe drinking environment at your event. Please read host responsibility guidelines and tips.
