Our portfolio of facilities includes community centres, statues and jetties through to large buildings such as the Town Hall, the Art Gallery and Tūranga, the 21st century knowledge centre that will replace our old central library.
Our plan
Many of our facilities were damaged in the earthquakes, some beyond repair. In the seven years since then many have been repaired or replaced, including 100 over the last three years.
We will spend $835 million on facilities over the next 10 years, including:
- Social housing renewals and replacements ($63 million – recovered through rent).
- Library resources ($53 million).
- Recreation and sport buildings and plant renewals ($35 million).
- Hornby library, customer services and south-west leisure centre ($32 million).
- Recreation and sports grounds renewals ($25 million).
- Ngā Puna Wai sports hub Stage 1 ($24 million).
- Performing Arts Precinct ($22 million).
- Linwood Woolston Aquatic Facility ($21 million).
- New Brighton Hot Salt Water Pools ($10 million).
- Metro Sports Facility ($123 million – Council’s share under agreement with the Crown).
- Multi-use Arena ($253 million – Council’s share under agreement with the Crown).
The funding will allow us to improve or complete a wide range of facilities to benefit Christchurch now and in the future.
What has changed after public feedback?
We heard from a wide range of submitters concerned about, or with ideas for new community facilities. Some of the main changes are:
- Bringing forward the Council’s capital contribution towards the new stadium by two years, with the contribution capped at $253 million.
- Providing a $30 million loan facility to support the building of more social housing in the city.
- Supporting a range of other initiatives, for example Linwood Pool, Edgeware Pool and additional weekend opening hours for Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre.
- Allocating funds to urgently complete a “network plan” for community facilities so potential development ideas can be considered in the context of a city-wide network.
