Consultation on the Horseshoe Lake Reserve earthquake repairs has now closed. People were able to provide feedback from 24 April to 9 June 2017.
Thank you for responding to the consultation and commenting on the proposal. The feedback from the first consultation [PDF, 221 KB] and additional information [PDF, 196 KB] is now available. All responses were analysed and a report was considered at the Coastal-Burwood meeting on Monday 7 August 2017.

Horseshoe Lake Reserve Earthquake rebuild
The Christchurch City Council is considering the removal of the earthquake damaged footbridge at Horseshoe Lake Reserve and the subsequent path relocation associated with this.
Earthquake damaged bridge
The bridge was damaged in the earthquakes and is costly to repair. The likelihood of it being damaged again if there was further seismic activity is high. If the bridge was rebuilt in the same location, the cost of foundations and piles for the new bridge would cost an additional $50,000 more than the preferred option as outlined below.
Instead, Council plan to replace the bridge with a rockery so people can still walk across the waterway at this point.
An alternative path is planned and will direct pedestrians across an existing storm water culvert that was not damaged in the earthquakes.
Revised layout
We would like your feedback on this. All feedback will be considered by the project team, prior to a staff recommendation being made to the Coastal/Burwood Community Board. The Community Board will consider the staff recommendation and community feedback prior to making a decision.
New carpark
The Coastal Burwood Community Board has approved the development of a replacement car park. This is in line with the 2002 Horseshoe Lake Reserve Master Plan.
Earthquake damaged carpark
This is shown as stage one on the map (see below).
It will allow for 28 carparks. This increases the number of carparks available. The existing car park was damaged in the earthquakes and only has seven carparks While it could be remediated, it is costly and it is likely that the land would fail again if there was further seismic activity. The land where the replacement carpark is planned has been assessed by geotechnical specialists.
There is also room for further expansion at a later date (shown as stage two and three on the map). Each stage allows for 28 parks. If all three stages are implemented, this will allow for 84 carparks in total.
