What are we doing?

We’ll be:

  • Adding tactile pavers and speed humps to the crossing on Somerfield Street, at the Strickland Street intersection.
  • Adding a small section of cycle lane with a narrow median on Strickland Street from the Colombo Street intersection to the Somerfield Street intersection. This will slow left tuning vehicles from Colombo Street into Somerfield Street and prevent vehicles from cutting into the cycle lane.
  • Extending the kerb build out in front of Moon Under Water to slow cars around the left-hand turn.
  • Reconfiguring Moon Under Water’s lease area for outdoor dining and fencing to improve pedestrian visibility. This will make the outdoor seating slightly larger and all in one place and provide more space for the footpath and crossing area.
  • Adding green paint to the existing cycle lanes to identify conflict points.
  • Adding a narrow central median island on Strickland Street to prevent cars turning too early when turning right from Strickland Street into Somerfield Street.
  • Adding new no stopping (approx. 1.5 car lengths) on the west side of Strickland Street, outside 1/141 Somerfield Street.
  • Adding new landscaping and cycle stands.

Traffic Impacts

  • On weekdays, between 7.30am and 5pm daily, one way traffic management systems will be installed simultaneously on Somerfield Street and Strickland Street, as shown on the map below.
  • At the end of the project, we’ll need to close a section of Somerfield Street for up to 3 nights to install the speed humps and associated line marking.
  • Outside of our working hours, and on weekends, two lanes of traffic will be maintained.
  • We’ll need to remove on-street parking, so we’ll place no parking signage out before we start work.
  • Emergency vehicle access will be provided if required.
  • Our friendly contractors will help people get around our site and assist with any queries.
  • Please be on the lookout for changes in traffic management and follow the signs.
  • The speed limit around our work site is 30kph so we can keep our workers safe.

Information for residents

  • Access for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to impacted properties within our worksite will be maintained.
  • Please advise our team if you have specific requirements e.g.medical visits, large deliveries, home help or any planned works.
  • There’ll be increased construction noise and vibration at times, and we’ll do our best to keep this to a minimum.
  • The work will have no impact on any services such as water, electricity, telecommunications and gas.
  • The timing of the work and certain activities will depend on the weather and the roads.
  • Please put your bins out as usual by 6am on your collection day. Our team will move them and return them if needed.
  • We know this work is disruptive so we appreciate your patience and understanding. Thanks for your cooperation.
