Selwyn Street (Roker Street to Somerfield Street) – new pedestrian crossing facilities

What

We’ll be installing new pedestrian crossing points including kerb buildouts at intersections and two new pedestrian refuge islands on Somerfield Street.

Why

These works will provide safe crossing locations in a busy pedestrian area, close to local schools, preschools and retail centre.

What are we doing?

We will be installing:

  • Planted kerb buildouts with pedestrian crossing facilities at the following
    locations:
    o    Selwyn Street/Cooke Street
    o    Selwyn Street/Leitch Street
    o    Selwyn Street/Dunn Street
    o    Selwyn Street/Stenness Avenue
  • New pedestrian refuge islands on Somerfield Street either side of Selwyn Street. 
  • Two new speed humps on Selwyn Street on the north side of Somerfield Street. 
  • Line marking, tactile pavers and signage. 
  • New green cycle paint on Somerfield Street through the Selwyn Street intersection. 

Traffic Impacts

  • During work hours, two way traffic will be maintained through the area we are working in. Temporary traffic lights may be used to manage traffic through the work area, including on side streets.
  • Outside of our working hours, and on weekends, two lanes of traffic will be maintained.
  • For the duration of the project, all on-street parking close to our work site will be temporarily removed to allow for safe working space.
  • Emergency vehicle access will be provided if required.
  • Our friendly staff will help people get around our site and assist with any queries.
  • Please be on the lookout for changes in traffic management and follow the signs.
  • The speed limit around our work site is 30kph so we can keep our workers safe.

Driveway Access

  • Driveway access to properties will be maintained. However, we may need to work in front of driveways from time to time. We’ll try and give you plenty of notice for this. However, if you need to get in and out of your property and we’re in your way, please just talk to one of the Fulton Hogan staff members and they will make sure you can use your driveway.

Information for residents and businesses

  • Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. If you may need to be escorted, please speak to staff onsite.
  • There will be increased construction noise and vibration at times, but we’ll do our best to keep this to a minimum.
  • The timing of the work and certain activities will depend on the weather and the condition of the roads. We’ll provide updates if there are changes to the planned works.
  • Please advise us via the contact information above if you have any specific property requirements e.g. medical visits, home help, large vehicle deliveries or planned works.
  • Work will have no impact on any services such as electricity, telecommunication and gas.
