Details

Christchurch City Council is planning to carry out paving repairs near the corner of High Street and Poplar Street, in the area between and surrounding the tram tracks.

Recent inspections have identified that water has seeped beneath the pavers, causing the surface to deteriorate. A temporary asphalt repair was completed by the Council Maintenance team to ensure safety and accessibility in the short term.

We will now be returning to remove the temporary asphalt and relay the pavers in this section. Works will include breaking out the asphalt and some of the concrete below and laying the new pavers. The new pavers feature an updated herringbone design that will help reduce the risk of future failures.

*The work is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete, from Monday 6 October to Sunday 19 October 2025. Most work will be carried out from Monday to Friday, but there may be some works at weekends if required.

Traffic Impacts

  • During this time there will be a road closure in place at all times for all vehicles at the intersection of High Street and Tuam Street, as shown over the page. There will be no access into and out of High Street from Tuam Street for the duration of the works, including weekends. Please follow the sign-posted detours.
  • Entry to High Street from Manchester Street will still be available, and traffic will be able to turn around and exit High Street back onto Manchester Street during the works.
  • Cyclists will need to dismount around the road closure.
  • Pedestrian access on High Street and Poplar Street will be maintained at all times, which is available for dismounted cyclists.
  • The southern loop of the Christchurch Tram route will be temporarily out of operation, with the #7 tram stop temporarily closed. During this time, the tram will stop at stop #8 as the final stop (at the corner of High and Lichfield streets) and then will head back along High Street on the city loop.

  • Please be on the lookout for changes in traffic management and follow the signs.
  • There will be increased construction noise and vibration at times, but we will do our best to keep this to a minimum.
