EMERGENCY WORKS – Investigation potholing for watermain pipe renewal

What

To support the design of an urgently needed watermain renewal, we will be undertaking potholing works to investigate the exact position of existing services under the roads and footpaths.

Why

Due to recent incidents involving burst water pipes along this route, we are prioritising a full renewal of the watermain and submain pipes, as they have reached the end of their serviceable life.

Where

Glandovey Road, from Thornycroft Street to Idris Road, and Pentlow Place, Fendalton.

When

21 August 2025 to early September 2025. Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm (weather/site condition dependent).

Contact

The contractor is Utilities Infrastructure NZ. If you have any questions or special property access requirements, call the Construction Manager Josh Gugich on 021 910 035, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. You can also call 0508 374 548 or email admin@uinz.co.nz.

Details

The investigation works are expected to take approximately 1–2 weeks. Another notice will be issued for the renewal works, which are expected to begin directly after the investigations, and take from early September to late November.

Note: The start date could be subject to change – however, we don’t expect a delay to be more than a couple of days.

Traffic impacts

  • Please take notice of the No Parking’ cones and signs, which our traffic management team will be putting out from Wednesday 20 August, in advance of the works starting.
  • If your vehicle remains in our work area, we may need to tow it to a nearby location outside our work zone to keep our works on programme. Thank you for your cooperation and we apologise for any inconvenience.
  • Two-way traffic is expected to be maintained during the investigation works. However, we’ll be shifting the traffic lanes to make space for the work, and a temporary speed limit of 30km/h will be in place.
  • When driving through the work area, please slow down and pay attention to all cones and signage, keeping an eye out for any changes in the temporary road layout.
  • Cyclists will need to merge with traffic. For your safety, please ride in the lane as there is no room for vehicles to pass.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works. However, some footpaths may be closed, and temporary crossing points will be in place where needed. If you need to be escorted, please speak to staff onsite.

Property access

  • Driveway access to properties will be maintained. However, we may need to work in front of driveways at times. We will try and give you plenty of notice for this.
  • If you need to get in and out of your property and we are in your way, please call us via the contact information above or speak with one of the Utilities Infrastructure NZ staff members and they will make sure you can use your driveway.
  • Please also advise us via the contact information above if you have any specific property requirements e.g. medical visits, home help, large vehicle deliveries, planned works.

Project scope

The investigation work involves potholing down to existing services to log their position in the road in relation to the new watermain we will be installing. We will also be potholing along the footpaths and berms to investigate the location of the submain pipes. The potholing work involves a specialised plant called a hydro-truck, which can be noisy in close proximity. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

The renewal works will involve pumping underground water, trenching and excavation works, and the installation of 765 metres of new mains and 835m of new submains. At the end of this project, the road will be completely reinstated with new asphalt. You will receive a new notice for the pipe renewal and road resurfacing works ahead of time.

Other details

  • Please note that recent road works on Glandovey Road involved a full road reconstruction, while our asphalt reinstatement will only involve resurfacing the top layer of the road. We’re doing this to ensure a tidy finish after the watermain renewal works.
  • The full project is expected to take approximately three months to complete.
  • The timing of the work and certain activities will depend on the weather and the condition of the roads. We will provide updates if there are changes to the planned works.

We know this work can be disruptive, and we appreciate your co-operation and understanding.
