Takapūneke Reserve – park development – Takarangi 3 construction

What

The Christchurch City Council in partnership with Ōnuku Rūnanga are developing Takapūneke Reserve. The next stage of this park development will include the installation of a third takarangi (spiral paths), vieiwing platform, seating, a pou, and interconnecting footpaths to the lower sections of the reserve near Beach Road and the Red House.

Takapūneke Reserve - corner Ōnuku Road and Stanley Place, Akaroa.
From late July 2025, construction access will be from both Stanley Place entrance and Beach Road, Akaroa.

The contractor is City Care Property. Phone 0508 248 922, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

Details

Takarangi 3 - July 2025 to end December 2025.

From April 2026 to end June 2026 further revegetation planting will be undertaken to complete the Green Point area of Takapūneke Reserve.

Takarangi 3 will include a raised walkway leading to a platform with a feature pou and seating. A path network will connect the takarangi 1, 2 and 3 and out to Britomart entranceway.

Impact of work

  • The work will be noisy while we complete the earthworks and construct footpaths, as well as raised viewing and seating platforms.
  • At times, some on-street parking on Stanley Place and Beach Road will be restricted for safety reasons.
  • A temporary yard will be established at the Ōnuku landfill site for the duration of Stage 2 construction along with a staging yard off Beach Road.
  • You can expect an increase in the number of trucks travelling through Akaroa township during this work.
  • During construction,  Takapūneke Reserve will remain open, however at certain times localised areas will be restricted for safety reasons.
