Background: The tree removals are part of a tree planting plan for Quarry View Drainage Reserve, which we consulted on with the local community from 6 September to 6 October 2024. We heard from 41 individuals whose feedback was considered by the Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board at their meeting on 12 December 2024, when the tree planting plan for the reserve was approved.
In addition to the tree removals, several other works are scheduled for the reserve, including the formation of new pathways and extensive tree planting.
Key details:
· Current tree status: There are 184 trees at the reserve, with an existing canopy cover of approximately 34%.
· Tree removals: We’re removing a total of 38 trees, which makes up the row of poplar trees located on the southern edge, next to properties on Spalling Road. More detail is provided below about the timing of the removals and other important information, including about why residents need to vacate their properties during the removals.
· Tree planting: We will be planting 114 new trees at the reserve, as well as 4,970m2 of native revegetation planting. This is projected to have a future canopy cover of approximately 45%. The new trees and vegetation will be planted during the next planting season (May to August 2025).
