Cranford Street / McFaddens Road intersection - safety improvements (night and day works)

What

We’ll be installing a safe speed platform on Cranford Street.

Why

We’ve identified a safety issue at the pedestrian crossing on Cranford Street. Installing this safety feature will help to protect everyone travelling through the area, including people walking, biking and scooting to school, preschool or local shops.

Where

The intersection of McFaddens Road / Cranford Street (northbound lane), St Albans.

When

Sunday 16 February 2025 *NIGHT WORKS* 6pm to 6am, and Monday 17 February 2025, 6am to 6pm (weather/site condition dependent). Find more timing information below.

Details

Project background: A safety issue has been identified at the intersection of McFaddens Road and Cranford Street. Currently, drivers exiting McFaddens Road are looking to the right along Cranford Street to choose a gap to join the traffic. When pulling out in a hurry, drivers sometimes miss the traffic signals at the pedestrian crossing, and drive through the crossing when the signals are on red.

In response, we’re installing a safe speed platform before the pedestrian crossing on Cranford Street. This will encourage drivers to travel at a safer speed, providing people more reaction time and reducing the risk of a crash with a person crossing at the lights.

Why we’re back: We recently completed the speed hump at the entrance to McFaddens Road to slow turning traffic and the related kerb and channel works. Due to wet weather, we were unable to complete the safe speed platform at the same time and need to return to finish these works. We’ll also be completing the remaining line marking at the same time.

Due to the busy traffic on Cranford Street, we’ll be undertaking the first half of these works (road resurfacing) overnight. This will help us to carry out the work safely and efficiently to limit disruption.

This work is highly weather dependent, if the weather is poor the work will be rescheduled to the following night.

Timing: This work involves night works and day works as follows:

  • Sunday 16 February – all night, from 6pm (traffic impacts on McFaddens Road start at 4pm; traffic impacts on Cranford Street northbound lane start at 11pm).
  • Monday 17 February – all day, until 6pm.

Find more information about the traffic impacts, and a map of the work area, over the page.

Contingency dates: This work is highly weather dependent. If the weather is poor, work will be rescheduled to:

  • Monday 17 February – all night, from 6pm (timing of traffic impacts as per above).
  • Tuesday 18 February – all day, until 6pm.

Future work: We will need to return for one night in mid-May to complete the coloured surfacing. Another notice will be distributed for that work closer to the time.

Traffic impacts

The following will be in place for the duration of these works:

  • A road closure will be in place on McFaddens Road, at the intersection with Cranford Street from 4pm on Sunday to 6pm Monday. There will be no access in or out during this time.
  • Detour routes will be in place, with signage to redirect traffic around the road closures.
Please allow extra travel time if you will be affected by the closures.

The traffic impacts on Cranford Street apply as follows:

  • Sunday 16 February (night impacts): A northbound road closure will be in place on Cranford Street, between Innes Road and the Christchurch Northern Corridor (CNC) roundabout, with no access for northbound traffic, from 11pm on Sunday to 6am on Monday. This is needed for the road resurfacing works to take place. Southbound traffic on Cranford Street will be unaffected.
  • Monday 17 February (day impacts): A northbound lane closure will be in place on Cranford Street, in the area near McFaddens Road where the work site is located. This will allow the final line marking to be completed. One lane will still be open to allow northbound traffic to get through.

Other details

  • A 30km/h speed limit will be in place so we can keep our workers and everyone safe.
  • Please be on the lookout for changes in traffic management and follow the signs.
  • For these night works, all on-street parking close to our work site will be temporarily removed to allow for a safe working space.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. If you may need to be escorted, please speak to staff onsite.
  • There will be increased construction noise and vibration at times, but we will do our best to keep this to a minimum.
  • The timing of the work and certain activities will depend on the weather and the condition of the roads. We will provide updates if there are changes to the planned works.
  • Please advise us via the contact information above if you have any specific property requirements e.g. medical visits, home help, large vehicle deliveries, planned works.
  • Work will have no impact on any services such as electricity, water, telecommunication and gas.
  • If this work coincides with your bin collection day, please put your bins out as usual by 6am. Our team will move them and return them, if needed.
