Cranford Street / McFaddens Road intersection safety improvements – day and night works

What

We’ll be making road safety improvements, including the installation of a safe speed platform on Cranford Street (northbound) and an additional speed hump at the entrance to McFaddens Road.

Why

We’ve identified a safety issue at the pedestrian crossing on Cranford Street. Installing safety features like a safe speed platform and speed hump will help to protect everyone travelling through the area, including people walking, biking and scooting to school, preschool or local shops.

Where

The intersection of McFaddens Road / Cranford Street (northbound), St Albans.

When

Monday 20 January 2025 to Tuesday 28 January 2025, 7am to 5pm and some nights (weather/site condition dependent).

Contact

The contractor is Fulton Hogan. Phone 0800 7623 34 (0800 ROAD FH) Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, or email cant.info@fultonhogan.com. After business hours, please feel free to call if the matter is urgent.

Details

A safety issue has been identified at the intersection of McFaddens Road and Cranford Street. Currently, drivers exiting McFaddens Road are looking to the right along Cranford Street to choose a gap to join the traffic. When pulling out in a hurry, drivers sometimes miss the traffic signals at the pedestrian crossing, and drive through the crossing when the signals are on red.

In response, we’re installing a safe speed platform before the pedestrian crossing on Cranford Street. These raised platforms encourage drivers to travel at a safer speed, providing people more reaction time and reducing the risk of a crash with a person crossing at the lights. At lower speeds, there’s also a better chance of people surviving a crash.

We’re also planning to install a speed hump at the entrance to McFaddens Road to slow turning traffic. We’ll improve the existing speed hump on the exit of McFaddens Road by updating the line marking. We’ll reduce the number of signs on McFaddens Road, as you approach Cranford Street, to make it clearer what’s ahead, as well as updating line marking and adding green surfacing.

Due to the busy traffic on Cranford Street, we’ll be undertaking this work during the day and overnight. This will help us to finish this work safely and efficiently to limit disruption.
