Botanical Gardens - pathway renewal

What

We are renewing this section of pathway along Riccarton Ave within the Botanical Gardens between the tennis court carpark and hospital gates.

Why

These works are part of the ongoing efforts to upgrade the paths within the Botanical Gardens. The works here will see this section of pathway widened to 4 meters for improved pedestrian access and safety along Riccarton Avenue between the tennis court car park and hospital gates out to Riccarton Avenue.

Mid April 2023 to early June 2023. Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm (weather/site condition dependent).

Details 

  • Sections of this existing footpath will closed to the public during the construction activities.
  • Temporary footpath access will be put in place during the construction period which, the public will directed and advised to use throughout the duration of this project.
  • The site will be fully fenced to create a safe working space for the contractor and to act as a separation barrier to the public.
  • Spotters will be on site to safely assist pedestrians around the construction zone during this time.
  • There will be heavy machinery operating on this site with construction plant and vehicle movements taking place during the day.
  • There will be a moderate increase in noise and activity in this area of the Botanical Gardens during this construction process.
  • The works will be staged in sections to help lessen the impact to the public.
  • Site access for construction vehicles will be from tennis court car park entrance and via the hospital gates at the Eastern end of the site. 
  • A  Christchurch City Council approved Arborist will be on site at all times to monitor the excavation activities and to advise the contractor during this construction process.
  • Multiple pedestrian crossing points will be created along the site so that the public can access the Botanical Gardens and connecting pathways.
