We're exploring ways to increase on-street parking near Hospital Corner (the intersection of Riccarton Avenue and Hagley Avenue)

A clearway will be trialled near Hospital Corner to increase overnight on-street parking.

This option was approved by Christchurch City Councillors at a Finance and Performance Committee meeting on Wednesday 18 December(external link).

The clearway trial is expected to get underway in February for six months and will allow 18 additional car parks on the north side of Hagley Avenue from 7.30pm to 7.30am. This means the road will be reduced to one lane at night, but both lanes will be open to traffic during the day.

We’ll work with key stakeholders such as Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury and Hato Hone St John before the trial begins and will capture feedback about the trial.

2023 lane closure trial

We ran a lane closure trial from Wednesday 25 October to Wednesday 8 November 2023. During this two-week trial, we temporarily closed a lane on Riccarton Avenue and Hagley Avenue to test the impact of creating more on-street car parking by permanently converting a lane into car parks.
