A section of the Papanui Parallel cycleway will be temporarily closed while we complete water main upgrades on Grassmere Street.

We're completing essential water main upgrades on Grassmere Street and alongside a section of the Papanui Parallel cycleway, between Grants Road and Rutland Street.

This work will allow us to replace pipes at the end of their service life, as well as add new pipes to future-proof water connections in this area.

To complete this work safely, we'll need to close a section of the Puari ki Papanui - Papanui Parallel cycleway for four weeks, starting from Wednesday 2 July 2025.

We're asking cyclists and pedestrians to please follow the signposted detour, which uses Grants Road, Rayburn Avenue, Paparoa Street and Tomes Road. Please see a map of the detour below.

The cycleway will reopen for regular use in early August, and you'll see us completing the rest of our work until early September 2025.

Work impacts

We'll be splitting this work up into three zones, and we'll start on zone two:

  • Zone one: Mid-July to late August 2025
  • Zone two: Wednesday 2 July to early August 2025 (cycleway section closed)
  • Zone three: Mid-July to late August 2025

Please note

Some other water main work is currently underway on Grassmere Street, closer to the intersection with Main North Road. Access through the site is possible for people biking and walking, but cyclists are asked to please dismount and walk their bikes through this work site if requested. For more information about this work, see the works notice(external link).

We know this cycleway is very well-used and we apologise for any inconvenience this temporary section closure causes.

Ngā mihi nui, thanks for your patience and understanding while we complete this essential work.
