We're making essential traffic signal upgrades at this busy intersection.

Our work to upgrade the traffic signals at this busy intersection kicked off last Sunday night and we’ve now started pouring concrete.

  • We’ll be pouring the foundation for the traffic signal pole at the corner of Papanui Road and Heaton Street this Sunday evening (18 May), weather permitting
  • We’ll need to temporarily close the left-hand turning lane from Papanui Road onto Heaton Street from this Sunday night until the night of Tuesday 20 May
  • This will give the fresh concrete enough time to cure before we re-open the lane
  • Left-hand turns onto Heaton Street will still be possible, as you’ll be able to turn left onto Heaton using the straight-through lane instead

We’ll be pouring another foundation on the opposite side of Papanui / Heaton in the coming weeks, and will provide another update closer to the time.

We know roadworks can be disruptive, so we’re grateful for your ongoing patience while we make these essential upgrades.

We're working at the intersection of Papanui Road, Heaton Street and Innes Road between Sunday 11 May and late June 2025.

Our work involves replacing the traffic signals, controller and cables, as they are at the end of their useful life.

Key information:

  • We’ll begin working at 6pm on Sunday nights and 7.30pm on weekday nights.
  • Our work will wrap up by 6am each morning.
  • We will not be working on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • We’ll be using temporary traffic lights during our working hours.
  • This is expected to cause delays, so we encourage people to allow more time when travelling through the intersection.
  • You may see the contractor undertaking some minor work during school hours to prepare for the night works.
  • Fulton Hogan is the contractor for this work. They can be contacted on 0800 762 334, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm or email cant.info@fultonhogan.com.

See the start works notice(external link) for more information about the work.

Ngā mihi nui, thanks for your patience while we make these essential upgrades.
