We're making safety improvements at two busy intersections in Linwood.

Whether you’re driving to work or home again, visiting whānau and friends, or letting tamariki walk, scoot or bike to school, you should be able to do it safely.

Linwood Avenue, Aldwins Road and Buckleys Road intersection

We'll be working at this intersection to install safe speed platforms on all approaches. We're doing this work overnight from Sunday 14 April to Friday 19 April 2024 between 6pm and 6.30am. See the start works notice(external link) for this work.

We're making these safety upgrades because this intersection has a high crash rate. It is currently within the top 1% of intersections within the Christchurch District for risk of being in a crash, compared to over 5700 Council-controlled intersections citywide.

There were 65 crashes in 10 years from 2014 to 2023, including two serious injury crashes and 21 minor injury crashes. The two serious crashes involved a person riding a bicycle and one on a moped.

Why do we install safe speed platforms?

Safe speed platforms are like long flat top speed bumps designed to slow traffic and give people time to react and avoid crashing.

They also work to reduce the severity of a crash. Safe speed platforms encourage drivers to reduce their speeds across intersections, which helps everyone to feel safer on the road.

Ferry Road, Aldwins Road and Ensors Road intersection

We plan to make safety improvements at this busy intersection in the next few months. We'll also replace the traffic signals because they've reached the end of their working life.

There were 49 crashes in 10 years from 2014 to 2023, including seven serious injury crashes and 13 minor injury crashes. The serious injury crashes involved a person crossing the road and being hit, a person riding a motorcycle, and five vehicle-to-vehicle crashes.

You may have seen us working on and around this intersection earlier this year. In that phase of our work, we were replacing a brick barrel stormwater drain(external link) constructed in the pre-1900s.
