We're upgrading the traffic signals at this busy intersection.

What we're doing at this intersection

We’re replacing old traffic signals, installing new ducting and making changes to the kerb and channel to support this new infrastructure.

You'll see us working between Sunday 7 September and the end of September 2025. We'll be working 24/7 to reduce the overall disruption at this busy intersection.

Please note that all of the businesses in the area are open as usual and are keen to see you. Please don't let our roadworks stand in the way of how you might normally visit them.

Traffic impacts

We have temporary traffic management in place while we complete this work:

  • Fitzgerald Avenue has been reduced to one lane in each direction at all times, with right-hand turns into St Asaph Street removed for the duration of the works.
  • St Asaph Street, east of Fitzgerald Ave, heading away from the city centre, is closed 24/7 for the duration of the works.
  • St Asaph Street, west of Fitzgerald Ave, heading towards the city centre, is closed nightly between 6pm and 6am and is being reopened each morning to single lane access from Fitzgerald Ave left left-hand turns only.
  • At times, temporary traffic lights will be installed on Fitzgerald Ave to facilitate safe crossing points for pedestrians.
  • Detours are in place. Please follow all signage and directions from staff on site.
  • A 30 km/h speed limit is in place so we can keep our team and everyone safe.
  • We have temporarily removed on-street parking to allow space for the works.
  • Cyclists are asked to merge with traffic through the site.

Detour map

The top-left detour via Lichfield Street and Barbadoes Street is only in place between 6pm and 6am each night.

The bottom-right detour via Tuam Street, Phillips Street and Ferry Road, is in place for the duration of the works.

See the start works notice(external link) for more information.
