We're resolving a safety issue at this busy St Albans intersection.

We've made good progress on our safety improvements at the intersection of Cranford Street and McFaddens Road.

Unfortunately, due to the heavy rain overnight on Sunday 26 January, we couldn't go ahead with our planned night works. This means we weren't able to install the safe speed platform on Cranford Street as we need dry weather for this work.

We'll need to come back for two nights of work in early- to mid-February, and we'll provide more information on this page when we have more information.

We were able to finish the kerb and footpath works on Cranford Street and install the new speed bump at the entry to McFaddens Road.

The remaining traffic management will be removed on Monday 27 January, with some cones and fencing still in place for safety. Cranford Street and McFaddens Road are open as usual.

Ngā mihi nui, thanks for your patience while we make this intersection safer for everyone.

Project detail

We're making safety improvements at the intersection of Cranford Street (northbound) and McFaddens Road.

We've received reports of a safety issue at the pedestrian crossing on Cranford Street. Drivers turning left out of McFaddens Road (heading north) are sometimes failing to notice the red traffic signals while attempting to find a gap in traffic.

We've worked alongside the Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board to consider several solutions to make this crossing point safer.

The community board has approved the installation of safe speed treatments(external link), including a safe speed platform in advance of the pedestrian crossing. These treatments will give motorists more time to notice if the traffic signal is red, and to stop safely if needed.
