Tyla is the councillor for the Riccarton Ward, which spans from Sockburn to Deans Avenue. He is the Multicultural Portfolio and Youth Portfolio lead in Council. He is also on the Christchurch – West Melton Water Management Zone Committee and the Songpa – Gu Sister City Committee.
His key interest areas lie in social equity, youth, multiculturalism, climate action, sport and business.
He has a strong background in business, social enterprise and youth activation. Prior to council, he ran a basketball coaching enterprise providing access to sport for youth and ran a consultancy business that worked with non-profits and large organisations.
After the attacks on 15 March 2019, Tyla travelled the world as a public speaker who advocated for peace, connectedness and tolerance.
He lives in Sockburn with his wife and daughter and loves getting out and about across the city, from visiting Riccarton Bush, to riding the tram and visiting the Margaret Mahy playground with his daughter.
