Councillor and Community Board candidates for the Burwood Ward in the 2025 local elections.
Burwood Ward Councillor.
Independent for Burwood
My principal place of residence is in the Burwood Ward area.
It’s been an absolute privilege to serve as your City Councillor for the past three years.
I’ve worked hard as your independent voice on Council, focusing on what matters to you: reducing rates rises, fixing our roads and footpaths, and backing local projects that improve everyday life.
I previously served as Chair of our Community Board and worked closely with residents to get things done on the ground. I’ve secured $3m for a new community facility in Marshland and funding to address surface flooding in Wainoni. I helped establish the Burwood East Residents’ Association and volunteer with Community Watch to help keep our neighbourhood safe.
This is my home too. I’ve lived here with my family for 35 years, and I’ll keep working hard to deliver the results you deserve.
I remain local, engaged and committed. Together, let’s keep Burwood thriving.

The People's Choice - Labour
My principal place of residence is not in the Burwood Ward area. I am also standing for Burwood Ward of the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board.
I’m Fionna Chapman, a long-time East Christchurch local dedicated to building a thriving community. I’m running for Council to bring the voices of our diverse community to the table.
Over decades of grassroots work, I’ve focused on fairness and community action. In my current role with Christchurch Methodist Mission in the East, I advocate directly for local needs.
I’m involved in projects like The Blanket Bank, Pasifika Mamas, and have been a long-time volunteer in community sports, supporting youth, connection, and wellbeing. As a Justice of the Peace, I help make essential services more accessible. Alongside community leaders, I serve on a local safety panel, pushing for practical, community-led improvements.
I bring strong governance experience as Chair of the Moana Community Trust and a former board member and Chair of Canterbury Basketball.
I believe Council should reflect our vibrant, evolving East, and I’m committed to ensuring all voices are heard.

I care deeply about the East! It's where I’ve lived most my life and continue to work and volunteer.
With decades of experience in community development, health, and governance, I bring a wide range of skills to the table. I’ve contributed nationally through Neighbours Aotearoa and Child Rich Communities, am involved in local groups and networks, and in 2025, served on the selection panel for the board of Basketball NZ. Through my work and volunteering, I’ve built genuine, lifelong connections.
Living in an intergenerational family, I understand the value of connection across all ages. You’ll often find me in the background, amongst the community, courtside at basketball, working on projects like Blanket Bank or Children’s Day, celebrating culture at Polyfest and Affirm, paddling on the Ōtākaro or spending time with family.
I'm committed to making local voices heard and to working with community members on issues that matter to them.

I'm Mike, Who am I? A family man, an independent community and health advocate, a social work student, a school board member for over 9 years, co-founded the Avondale Neighbours Group, a Trustee at WACST@Burwood and a supporter of the Avon Otakaro Network. Why am I standing? Because Burwood Matters. There is still more to be done – gutters, footpaths, infrastructure. Continue to build communities, by getting neighbours talking and looking out for one another. Burwood’s green spaces need to be safer and secure for cyclists’, walkers as a priority, while not overspending on cycleways. Focusing on big events, to bring back more investment within local businesses. Why vote for me? Because I get things done! I can think of solutions no one else has yet and I never ever give up on any issue.
What’s Next! Please Vote Mike Gibbs for the change you want to see happen.

It has been a privilege to serve on the Community Board the past 3 years.
I am a regular guy with a passion for sport and volunteering. I volunteer for our local community watch, Canterbury Wheelchair Rugby, coached the New Zealand Wheel Blacks to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics and I’m a trustee of the Marshland Hall Trust.
This Community is incredibly important to me, It is my home, I have lived in the Burwood Ward my whole life, Attending Windsor (now Waitakiri), Chisnallwood and SBHS. My children now attend these schools too.
My experience as General Manager of a manufacturing business has taught me how to make practical, logical and commercially sensible decisions. Highlighted by taking note of feedback from community consultation and challenging CCC Staff recommendations when necessary, which lead me to voting against speed bumps at intersections that have traffic lights.

I’m a proud local - this is where my family has grown, where I’ve coached rugby, and where community matters. For over two decades, I’ve worked in education and social services, from Aranui and Hornby High Schools to leadership roles at Odyssey House. I know strong communities are built through collaboration and authentic connections. Together, we deserve safer streets, better traffic solutions, quality parks, and spaces that unite us. We need infrastructure that supports growth and youth programs that offer real opportunity. I’ve stood alongside diverse communities to drive positive change, guided by a commitment to do what’s right. If elected, I promise transparent, accountable leadership that puts family first with moral clarity at its core. This election isn’t just about me - it’s about all of us. I’m asking for your vote, and together we’ll shape a future-focused board we can all be proud of.

The People's Choice

Raised on the east side of Christchurch and an Avonside old girl, I am standing because I believe in common-sense decision-making, a strong local voice, and tackling the issues that actually matter to people.
I am standing for the Burwood Ward to bring a fresh perspective, practical experience, and a deep commitment to the community. With a background in education and community funding, I have worked alongside businesses, sports teams, community events, and grassroots initiatives to drive meaningful change that lasts.
For too long, the East has been neglected. More than a decade after the earthquakes, we are still dealing with essential repairs that never seem to make the priority list.
I am dedicated to advocating for better infrastructure, safer neighbourhoods, and supporting our local services and providers that truly reflect our community needs.
