The playground will complement the play equipment at neighbouring Te Waka Unua School as well as the park’s existing outdoor fitness, basketball and tennis areas.

A new location next to the school will

  • link via a gate to the school’s central pathway, and to its river and nature themes
  • be overlooked by the school
  • be separated from Ferry Road while still having some visibility to road users
  • leave space for the heritage setting of the former MED substation at the park entrance

The Woolston Community Association is also interested in finding visual and social connections between the playground and their nearby Community Centre in the park.

Developing the plan

A group of senior students from Te Waka Unua School have worked with their teacher to consult with five local preschools.

They have  come up with suggestions for the playground equipment and layout as shown on the  consultation plan, and helped us consider access to suitable areas for all students.

Key features of the playground
A timber-framed swing-set with basket swing, infant swing seat and standard swing seat

‘Space Shuttle’ spinner—a four metre spinning climbing tower

A ‘nature’ obstacle course over low mounding and through planting, including timber stepping planks, posts with balance beams and boulders
Seat with nearby shade tree

A connecting path from the existing park footpath through to a new school gate and path

The existing playground will be removed and the area re-grassed.

The concept plan shows photo examples of the proposed equipment.
