The plans for the community garden include a vegetable garden, herb garden, berry plantings, orchard and food forest, along with a wildflower area (to encourage pollinating insects) and an area for individual allotments.
There will also be a family/children's area with bbq and play area.
The garden will be staged over time as resources allow, but will eventually cover the entire park of 8498m and will include buildings towards the rear of the park for storage, community use/education, and a tunnel house.
The gardens will not restrict public access into and through the park.
Terms of the lease
The Te Ahu Patiki/Mt Herbert Community Garden Group is a sub-committee of the Diamond Harbour Community Association, who will hold the lease.
The new lease will be for a term of 15 years, with three five-year renewal periods.
The new lease will be in accordance with the Reserves Act 1977 and fees and charges will be in line with Council’s standard charging rates.
The decision-making process
The decision whether to hold a hearings panel will be made once we know if people wish to speak to their submission.
If a hearing is required it will be held in early 2022 and a report will then go to the Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula Community Board for a final decision in 2022.
If no hearing is required, a report will go to the Board for a decision by February/March 2022.
