Roto Kohatu Reserve is getting more popular with water sports, user groups and the public, and we've prepared draft plans to help manage and plan the development of the reserve.

Update April 2022 

Consultation was open between 14 January 2021 and 28 March 2022. During this time we received 86 submissions from individuals and groups. 

The vision for the Roto Kohatu Reserve draft management plan is to develop and manage the reserve as an aquatic playground for a wide range of organised and informal water-based recreation and sport activities, while supporting the biodiversity and amenity values of the area.

Located at the north-west edge of Christchurch, Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri are mana whenua of this takiwā, and the plan has been developed with their input along with user groups and the community. 

As detailed in the draft plan, we’re planning to divide the reserve into three distinct management areas, to reflect different patterns of use that will be managed according to specific policies and objectives.

Draft development plan 

Comments are also invited on the draft development plan [PDF, 1.1 MB] that has been generated from the management plan.

The development plan shows how to carry out the management plan vision through implementing the objectives, preserving the values and responding to the issues identified in the management plan. 

Key improvements proposed for the development of Roto Kohatu are:

  • Enhancements on the edge of Lake Rua so it is easier for people to swim and to launch boats
  • Develop a new diving platform and jetty or pontoon for swimmers
  • Expand Lake Tahi so that we can add two new ‘courts’ for canoe polo
  • A shared sports facility on the edge of Lake Tahi

Other things we would like to do include adding more landscaping, creating more picnic areas, enhancing the walking tracks, and potentially shift the entrance to the reserve.

Come and talk to us

We’ll be on site to answer your questions and discuss the plans on Tuesday 15 February from 4pm to 7pm.

Find us at the picnic area off the main car park at the head of Lake Rua. Access is from the main vehicle entrance off Sawyers Arms Road.

Our drop-in session will go ahead under the red traffic light system. Please sign in and wear a mask.

Finalising and deciding on the plans

The Hearings Panel will consider a staff report and all submissions to help finalise their recommendations to the Waimāero Fendalton- Waimairi – Harewood Community Board.

As delegated decision-makers the Board will decide whether to adopt the plan or ask for further input. Once adopted by the Community Board the plan becomes the operative management plan for the Reserve.

Once the management plan is adopted, the Community Board will consider the consultation feedback and any changes to the draft development plan, before approval.
