What we're doing

Safe speeds

Lowering the speed limit is one of the ways we can create safer roads for all users. The speed you’re travelling at can mean the difference between life and death, so it is worth taking a little longer.

Proposed changes

We’re making it safer for you to get around the Selwyn Street area, no matter how you travel. We’re proposing to lower the speed limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h on some streets.  

Changing 50 kilometres per hour speed limits to 40 kilometres per hour on these streets:

  • Somerset Crescent
  • Willard Street
  • Selwyn Street (South of Brougham Street)
  • Rosewarne Street

Key topics

  • Can you put in 30km/h on the side streets instead of 40km/h – The NZTA is very specific about what speed limit can be placed on a road. Their Speed management guide identifies what speed a road should be based on its characteristics. Those include the traffic flow, the type of area (residential, Central Business District, etc.) The side streets off of Selwyn Street do not meet the criteria for 30km/h within this guide.
  • Enforcement of the new speed limit - We will be advising NZ Police of the new speed limits to enable them to take appropriate enforcement action if required.

A staff report to the Waihoro/ Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board to recommend to Council to approve the Selwyn Street Area speed limit changes will be presented:

Decision made

The Council decided to approve the new speed limit, on 10 June 2021.

The Council and the Waihoro/Spreydon-Cashmere Community board made the following changes to the proposal:
