Christchurch School of Gymnastics are currently operating out of an earthquake damaged facility within Queen Elizabeth II Park. They would like to relocate within the park.
Consultation on the proposed Lease at QEII Park has now closed. People were able to provide feedback from 6th June, 2017 - 3rd July, 2017
During this time we heard from 108 individuals and groups. You can read their feedback [PDF, 59 KB] which has been provided to the Coastal-Burwood Community Board, ahead of their meeting on 18 September, 2017. You can also read the additional information leaflet [PDF, 721 KB] that answers some of the questions raised by the community during the consultation. From 14 September you can view the meeting details, including the staff report. You can view the minutes three days after the meeting.
Christchurch School of Gymnastics (CSG) have been based at their current location for 21 years but the cost of repairing the building is high and the club are looking at options to relocate closer to the new QEII Recreation and Sports Centre, which is planned for completion in 2018.
They would like to remain close to the recreation centre so that members could potentially use both facilities in one visit.
The club has 5840 members and employs 60 staff.
A lease of 35 years has been recommended. Under the Local Government Act Christchurch City Council must consider public feedback when deciding whether or not to grant a lease in excess of six months.
The proposed lease area is approximately 3151 square meters of open space, adjacent to the Recreation and Sports Centre QEII Park. This includes a three metre wide access strip around the perimeter of the planned building.
The current lease for 2373 square metres will remain active until the building has been demolished by CSG or until a suitable new tenant has been found, subject to council approval.
The approval for a new lease will be dependent on a number of things, including the Council approving the proposed designs, plans and specifications for the gymnasium and funding for the new building being secured.
The rent payable under the new lease will be set in accordance with the Council's policy for setting sports club rents.
