We're moving and improving the bus shelter at The Palms
People were able to provide feedback from 25 September to 10 October 2020.
During this time we heard from 15 individuals and groups. You can read their feedback [PDF, 16 KB]. The project safety audit [PDF, 1.2 MB] is also available for viewing. The next step is for the Coastal Burwood Community Board to consider the staff report before making their decision to approve or not approve. This is scheduled to to take place at their meeting on 7 December 2020, 3.30pm, Community Board Rooms, Union Street, New Brighton.
The staff recommendation to the Coastal - Burwood Community Board was to approve the New Brighton Road bus stop and bus shelter upgrade proposal. This was done at their meeting on 7 December 2020. Construction will begin July 2021 and is likely to take 8-9 weeks.
We are moving the bus stop on New Brighton Road to make it easier, nicer and safer for bus users of the 100, 44 and Orange line routes.
The new bus stop site is between the Marshlands Road intersection and The Palms Mall carpark entrance. This site is safer and nicer for passengers, with improved visibility, better lighting and a more attractive site. We will also be able to install a better bus shelter.
This is a big improvement from the current site which is isolated on the south side of The Palms.
Four existing Magnolia trees need to be removed to enable the bus stop relocation. We will replant three new magnolia trees within the new layout.
We are putting in some flexi posts by the exit from The Palms onto New Brighton Road. This will improve safety by discouraging drivers from making dangerous u-turns on New Brighton Road after exiting the mall car park.
There are some drainage issues by the current bus stop on New Brighton Road. We plan to fix this problem by re-levelling the footpath and kerb on the north side of New Brighton Road.
