The Uni-Cycle Major Cycle Route crosses Waimairi Road at Dovedale Avenue and provides a high-quality route for cyclists to travel between the city and Avonhead.
The number of cyclists on the route has been steadily growing by up to 20% per year. Waimairi Road is used by nearly 300 cyclists per day which is likely to grow with the increasing popularity of the Major Cycle Route.
Without dedicated facilities, cyclists sharing the road with vehicles creates safety issues. Since 2011 there have been four crashes involving cyclists in this area with two resulting in injury. The proposed cycle lanes will provide an improved level of safety for the increasing number of cyclists.
Waimairi Road currently has two vehicle lanes and parking on both sides. Some parking spaces need to be removed to provide room for on-road cycle lanes.
We are considering the removal of on-street parking;
We are also considering P120 parking restrictions on the eastern side of Waimairi Road to prevent all-day parking. Restrictions would apply from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, March to November.
We would like to hear your feedback on both the cycle lanes and the parking restrictions.
