Making it safer and easier to get around as Christchurch grows.
The NZ Transport Agency and Christchurch City Council are working on a plan for one of the city’s busiest areas – between Moorhouse Avenue and Brougham Street.
Traffic volumes and travel times have increased, and over the past 10 years, 11 people died and 130 people were seriously injured in crashes within the project area.
We want to make it safer and easier for everyone to live, do business and travel in this area, both now and in the future. Our plan will cover the next 30 years, and will include short, medium and long-term improvements.
We are in an early investigation stage, gathering information and examining the problem before we start forming the strategy.
As part of our research, we will investigate and develop a range of treatments and options which consider all types of travel. We want to make sure we find the right balance that takes into account the needs of the local community as well as those travelling around the area.
We need to make sure we get this right and that any changes fit into the long-term transport programmes being developed for Canterbury. We need to invest money in the right solutions that will keep people safe and keep things moving as the city grows.

The Transport Agency started gathering customer insights on SH76 Brougham Street in 2015. We have been looking at future transport projects across the city. Both the Transport Agency and the Council recognise the need for a co-ordinated approach in this area.
