Consultation on proposed parking restrictions London Street, Lyttelton has now closed. People were able to provide feedback from 19 June 2018 to 9 July 2018.
We received 26 submissions with eight respondents in general support, 12 respondents supporting the plan but with some concerns and six respondents did not generally support the proposal.

Common themes
Angle Parking
Angle parking is not appropriate for this section of London Street, because angle parking can increase safety risks on the road. Angle parking would also conflict with fire engine and ambulance movements, and other heavy vehicle movements which use this section of London Street. Angle parking on London Street near the supermarket is a different road environment with lower speeds and traffic calming.
Residents Only Parking Spaces
Number 47 to 53 London Street is zoned commercial in the District Plan, and Resident's Only Parking spaces are not generally used in commercially zoned areas.
However, as a result of the feedback received during consultation, staff will be recommending to the Community Board that parking restrictions are only installed on the north side of London Street, and that the south side of London Street are left unrestricted. The old crosshatching outside the old fire station entrance is intended to be removed and replaced with parking spaces, also with no time restrictions.
A report will be presented to the Banks Peninsula Community board for project approval at their meeting on Monday 13 August 2018. The agenda will be available on the Council website from Friday 10 August 2018.
Background
London Street, between Dublin Street and Canterbury Street, currently has a variety of on street parking restrictions, parking signage, and line markings. Due to the rebuilding and relocation of the Lyttelton fire station and the ambulance station, we are reviewing the current on street parking layout. We will also be installing new clear access markings for the emergency services stations. Parking demand is high at times including Saturdays with the Lyttelton Farmers Market.
What are we proposing?
- Ensure entrances to St Johns and the fire station are kept clear for emergency vehicles, with yellow cross hatching on the road
- "No stopping" lines on several vehicle entrances that are not clearly visible
- "No stopping" lines on Canterbury Street outside Albion Square, for maintenance vehicles access.
- Install a 60 minute parking restriction* from Spooky Boogie café to Canterbury Street
- Install a 60 minute parking restriction* from the old fire station site to Canterbury Street
- Install a five minute parking restriction outside the ATM.
