In February 2016, a group of local young people from Hoon Hay spoke to the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board about lighting the basketball court in Hoon Hay Park that they use regularly. They also indicated a willingness to help with any fundraising towards the project.
Council staff have continued to work with these young people, leading to discussions about further equipment being added in this area of Hoon Hay Park. These ideas include a park shelter and barbeque, painting the court and platform seating.
These items are currently unfunded so while we are seeking feedback about the lighting, we are also asking the community for their preferred option so we can prioritise how funding is spent.
We hope that the installation of these items will encourage more family use of the park space.
The proposed lighting is intended to be operated on a timing system, so that users can turn the lighting on and it will automatically turn off after a set period. It is proposed that this lighting will be available for use seven nights per week until 9pm in the evening.

Once the consultation period has closed, the project team will analyse the feedback and produce a staff report for the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board, who will then make a recommendation to the Council Head of Parks for final decision.
If this project is approved construction of the lighting is likely to commence in April 2018. Installation of the additional items will occur when funding becomes available.
