The first 700m is now open from Halswell Quarry. The rest of the track remains temporarily closed due to ongoing fire operations.
Start: Halswell Quarry, Kennedys Bush Road.
Finish: Summit Road, Port Hills.
Time: 1 hour one way.
Toilets: Located at Halswell Quarry.
Dogs: No dogs allowed.
The track can be started at Halswell Quarry or at the end of Kennedys Bush Road. Mostly on a wide 4WD surface, the track starts with a steady climb and then flattens and descends to a gate. From the gate it's all uphill to where it finishes at the Summit Road.
If you've got enough energy, it's well worth crossing the Summit Road to follow the Crater Rim Walkway for a short distance. There you'll get views down Lyttelton Harbour and towards Gebbies Pass.
Note: The track is mostly through private land. Stay on the track and be mindful that cattle can be grazing alongside it. Lambing is between August and September. The track is shared use so many mountain bikers also use it to access the Port Hlls track system.
