Okains Bay Museum and whānau from Koukourarata invite you to Waitangi Day Commemorations

A special free event supported by Christchurch City Council and Manatū Taonga / Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • 9am: The Museum gates open, granting you free entry to a day brimming with interactive displays, family-friendly games and activities, delicious food and treats. 
  • 9.45am: Manuhiri/invited guests gather opposite the Old School on the Ngāi Tahu Reserve.
  • 10am: Pōwhiri begins on Ngāi Tahu Reserve.
  • 10.30am: The Governor General’s message.
  • 1.30pm: The Kāi Tahu waka, Kōtukumairangi arrives (subject to tide).

Okains Bay Museum and whānau from Koukourarata have chosen to host the 2024 Waitangi Day Commemoration as a free event, breaking down cost barriers and welcoming everyone. 

Show your support for the Museum’s vital role in preserving national and regional treasures by bringing generous cash koha (donations). Food and drinks will be available for purchase, but feel free to bring a picnic and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. 

Bring your whānau and friends, plenty of cash (limited EFTPOS available) and join us for this special day as we honour our Tiriti partnership, and support the Museum to preserve taonga of national and regional significance for all to enjoy, now and into the future.
