The Rose of No Man’s Land

Visit the Nurses Memorial Chapel, find out about the history of this beautiful building and enjoy some music.

Open on selected dates during the Heritage Festival, the Nurses' Memorial Chapel, built in 1927, sits adjacent to the Botanic Gardens in its own beautiful and tranquil garden.

Enjoy a range of background music including “The Rose of No Man’ s Land", a tribute to WW1 nurses who cared for wounded and dying soldiers from the Front Line.

Chapel organ music and recorded songs will be played during opening hours. Leisure time spent listening to music sustains us all.

Photographs and programmes of 1914 to 1918 concerts will be on display in this unique memorial.

Other areas of interest to visitors include the:

  • Beautiful arts and crafts building
  • The boutique museum including Victor Peter's three World War 1 service medals, OBE awarded for services to music in 1947 and the WW1 ribbon bar
  • Stunning stained-glass windows and associated stories
  • Springtime memorial garden and the Sam Mahon sculpture “Caring Hands”
  • Rocky history of the chapel and its post-earthquake journey.
