Sutton Heritage House and Garden, the former home and studio of Canterbury artist Bill Sutton will be open to visit. Guides will be present to answer questions.
Visitors will be able to tour the house and garden where the artist William (Bill) Sutton did much of his work.
The Sutton Heritage House and Garden, listed as a Category 1 Heritage Place by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, was designed for Bill Sutton by the sculptor Tom Taylor, his friend and colleague at the University of Canterbury's School of Fine Arts.
The house, built in the modernist style in 1963, is a rare example of a home designed and built specifically for an artist. The lush garden was designed, planted and maintained by Bill Sutton himself, and still retains much of its original character including a number of specimen trees.
Following the Canterbury Earthquakes the house became part of the residential red zone but was saved through community action.
Wheelchair access is to the ground floor only.
