Visitors will be able to tour the house and garden where the artist Bill Sutton did much of his work.

The Sutton Heritage House and Garden has recently been listed as a Category 1 heritage building. It was designed for Bill Sutton by his friend and colleague, the sculptor Tom Taylor.

The house, built in the modernist style in 1963, is a rare example of a home designed and built specifically for an artist. The lush garden was designed, planted and maintained by Bill Sutton himself, and still retains much of its original character including a number of specimen trees.

Following the Canterbury Earthquakes the house became part of the residential red zone but was saved through community action. Its retention stands as a tangible reminder of that traumatic time in the history of Christchurch. It was the first completed facility in the red zone and it was the venue for the milestone event of the handing over of the red zone to the city.

Wheelchair access is to the ground floor only.
