Old Stone House open day: A link to early South Asian settlers

Visit the Old Stone House and soak up the ambience and history of this heritage building, originally built for Sir John Cracroft Wilson’s Indian workers.

The open day will feature a range of events throughout the day, including:

  • 11.30am and 12.30pm: Classical Indian dancers
  • Midday: A talk about the arrival of the Indian workers in the 1850s
  • 1pm: Music by Monk Party - sitar, tabla, bansuri, oud and guitar
  • Midday to 2pm: Free face painting

There will also be a display of information on the history of the Old Stone House from its beginnings as the living quarters for John Cracroft Wilson's Indian servants, to its current use as a community centre and event venue.

The Old Stone House is a Christchurch City Council-owned building but is managed by a committee from the Cracroft Community Centre and serves as a community centre, wedding and events venue.
