Mairehau Neighbourhood Community Garden: Open day
The Canterbury Community Gardens Association is hosting open days at seven gardens across the city during the Heritage Festival.
Come along and visit this community garden and learn about its history and purpose from the people involved.
The idea for Mairehau Neighbourhood Garden was conceived around early 2021, and came to fruition over almost two years, culminating in our grand opening on 5 November 2022. The idea was dreamed by our staff at Neighbourhood Trust as we pondered what families in the Mairehau and St Albans area would do if our funding for kai support ever dried up. We wanted a place where people can learn skills to take control of their own food production and security.
The land for the garden was made available by St Albans Baptist Church. Mairehau Neighbourhood Garden provides a place for recreation and leisure through opportunities to volunteer in the garden; to attend workshops that share gardening knowledge and skills; and to simply sit and enjoy the garden environment on the seating that was built as part of the overall garden design.
Our dreams for the garden are to share knowledge and gardening skills more widely; to see people taking what they have learned and applying it in their own garden; to discover people in our community who have skills that they can share with others, and in the process build a stronger community through the relationships forged in the garden.
