Associate Professor Karen Pollard from the University of Canterbury will give an illustrated talk on the amazing history and restoration of the 1864 Townsend Teece Telescope, which has been in the Observatory Tower since 1896 and has recently been re-installed for public stargazing.
The people of Ōtautahi Christchurch have been able to explore the wonders of the night sky and the science of astronomy through the University of Canterbury's stargazing sessions at the Observatory Tower at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre (originally Canterbury College and then the University of Canterbury).
The talk will include the historical background of the telescope and show many photographs of the telescope from before and after the earthquakes, as well as of the team of experts involved in bringing it back to the central city for public use.
Talk takes place in the Cloisters Studio, 2 Worcester Boulevard, Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre.
