Growing a Fair Food System - Together

We’re pleased to announce the upcoming Growing a Fair Food System Together Workshop, a focused opportunity for food champions to contribute to strategic direction to build a strong and sustainable food system for Canterbury.

Access to healthy and nutritious food is a basic human right, however the reality looks different for many. Almost a third of our food is wasted while 1 in 4 children in NZ are going hungry, with food running out “sometimes” or “often”. Food production is the largest contributor to greenhouse gases. These are just some of the food system challenges we face today.

Growing food resilience is a shared responsibility — and real solutions begin with connection. This workshop is about bringing together diverse voices: including local growers and farmers, supermarkets, food businesses, food educators, green grocers, emergency responders, food banks, academics, change makers and advocates, food waste and rescue champions, policy makers, government, everyday residents and more! This session is designed to facilitate purposeful collaboration.

Why it matters:

  • Shared insights lead to smarter strategies — no single person or agency can tackle food challenges alone
  • Local knowledge is powerful — and only surfaces when we’re in conversation
  • Food resilience is climate resilience — and Canterbury needs us all to be forward-thinking and adaptive
  • Connection fosters action — networks formed here may drive lasting collaboration

Your experience and insights would be an invaluable contribution to these discussions, and will help define the next steps, including food related strategy and policy refresh.

We are going to have a swap table so please bring any food you have in surplus, whether it is grown, cooked, baked or preserved, all is welcome to share and trade for other goodies you might want in exchange! Let’s keep it local. Anything remaining can go to charity. This is completely optional!

We are lucky to have confirmed two incredible guest speakers: Gina Lee Duncan and Angela Clifford:

Angela leads Eat New Zealand, Aotearoa’s not-for-profit food collective dedicated to reconnecting people to their food. She works with communities and regions across the country on food resilience, security and food culture. A recognised environmental and food systems leader, Angela is also the co-owner of The Food Farm in North Canterbury. She champions local, mana-centred approaches to all things.

Mokopuna of Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula, Residing in Koukourarata on her Ngāti Huikai ancestral land, Gina-lee is passionate about the recognition of wellbeing when connected to whenua (land), pūrākau (stories), and kai systems. Essentially, whakapapa — an indigenous lens on "we are what we eat." Gina-lee has a background in Whānau Ora, where she developed an investment initiative supporting whānau to grow their own kai, thereby creating food security networks throughout Te Waipounamu. The Kōanga Kai kaupapa engaged over 1,500 whānau members during the three years it ran.
