Head to High Street on Saturday 2 September to experience 16+ of the city's best chefs cooking over fire!
This September, Ōtautahi Christchurch Central City will bring the heat with Fire on High, a free street food event featuring a stellar selection of local chefs cooking over fire utilising Food by Fire's custom-made BBQs. Expect everything from a slow-cooked whole hog, Akaroa Salmon hotdogs, vegan plantation, galbi (Korean short rib) to forged fare of acorn waffles with BBQ wild boar and apple chimichurri. Fire on High is a great way to explore sights, smells and tasty creations from 16 of the city's best chefs, alongside pop-ups from some of the surrounding businesses.
The free event runs from 11am to 10pm on Saturday, 2 September and is centred outside Smash Palace. High Street will be closed to vehicles between Tuam Street and Lichfield, and Manchester Street. The event concept is the brainchild of Rod Thomson, owner of Food by Fire and Base Pizza.
The lineup of cooking talent is as good as it gets. It allows people to access some chefs they may not have the chance to experience due to affordability or accessibility. For the chefs, engaging with the community outside the sometimes monotonous routine is a fun and restoring way to do things differently and find inspiration.
The chef lineup includes:
On the day, Smash Palace will provide the beer garden for the event and allow people to bring in their food from any chef. They also have a recently renovated indoor area that's warm and dry for people to retreat. Their house DJs will be playing upfront for the day too.
