Public Notice of Right to Demand a Poll on the Electoral System

Public Notice of Right to Demand a Poll on the Electoral System

Notice is given under section 28 of the Local Electoral Act 2001 that electors of the Christchurch City Council have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used at the next triennial general election (2019) of the Christchurch City Council and its community boards.

The choice is between the First Past the Post (FPP) and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral systems.  Unless a poll determines otherwise, the FPP electoral system will continue to be used for the Christchurch City Council and its community boards.

A valid demand for a poll must be:

  • Made in writing.
  • Signed by at least 5 percent of eligible electors of the Christchurch City Council.  This will require a minimum of 12051 elector signatures.
  • Delivered to the office of the Christchurch City Council, 53 Hereford Street, Christchurch by 5pm Wednesday 21 February 2018 for the outcome of the poll to apply to the 2019 triennial general election of the Christchurch City Council.

Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of the Christchurch City Council.

For further information, please contact Jo Daly, Council Secretary, phone (03) 941 8999.

Dated at Christchurch this 17 day of October 2017.

 Jo Daly

COUNCIL SECRETARY
