Pedestrian counters are in place to track the count of pedestrians in selected locations across Ōtautahi Christchurch. Currently, 21 pedestrian counters are included, predominantly located in Christchurch’s central city.

The counters track pedestrian travel and direction as people pass through the location of the counter. The counters provide a snapshot of pedestrian travel. The current network spans mostly the central city, therefore pedestrian movement in other areas of the city are not counted. The network was originally implemented in December 2020.

To consider how pedestrian travel changes over the day, total pedestrian counts were analysed relative to time of day. For weekdays, there are clear peaks across key commuting times around 8:30am and 5pm, and a significant peak between 12pm and 1pm.

Fluctuations occur depending upon weather, time of day, day of week, and season. Events and other activities can also have an impact on pedestrian counts.

We maintain the data to the best of our ability, however, counters may go offline from time to time.
