Sections of the stormwater drain below Ferry Road need repairing. This means we need to dig up parts of the road. We're doing this work over the summer while the drains are dry and clean.

Ferry Road stormwater and transport work

The stormwater drains beneath Ferry Road are damaged and need to be fixed. We're also repairing manholes, installing new ones and installing new pipe lining. The initial construction work on the first manhole began in early December 2023 near Osborne Street. Work was paused during Christmas and recommenced on 8 January 2024.

While we’re repairing and replacing the stormwater drains, we’re planning to replace the traffic signals at the Ferry/Ensors/Aldwins Roads intersection because they have reached the end of their working life.

There are also plans to make safety improvements to the intersection by installing safe speed platforms.  The intersection upgrade was consulted on earlier this year and approved by the Council in September 2023.

What we're doing

Stormwater work

A brick barrel stormwater drain, constructed pre 1900s, lies beneath Ferry Road. Sections of the brick barrel drain are damaged and need to be repaired. Repairs include installing new manholes, repairing existing manholes and installing pipe lining. Installation of the lining will be done through the newly constructed manholes.

The installation and repair of the manholes will require excavation of the road.

We’ve scheduled the installation of the pipe lining for early March, as the brick barrel needs to be dry and clean before the liner can be applied.  The installation work will take between 8 to 25 days per manhole site.

Manhole work

We need to construct five new manholes over the brick barrel stormwater drain to create access for installing the lining. Our contractors are working to minimise the impact on the affected communities in the area as much as possible.

Work on the first manhole (A) began in early December 2023 near Osborne Street. Work will stop before Christmas to avoid disruption to local businesses and recommence on 8 January 2024.

Traffic changes

While the construction works are in progress, all traffic lanes on Ferry Road, Ensors Road, and Aldwins Road will be maintained with speed restrictions. Speed will be lowered to 30km/h near the construction sites.

While work is in progress on manhole B and manhole C, there will be right-turning restrictions at the intersection and side roads.

There will be no right turns from Ferry Road into Aldwins Road (coming from the east) and into Ensors Road (coming from the west). See map below.

Transport work

The traffic signals at the intersection of Ferry/Ensors/Aldwins roads need full replacement including underground cables because they’ve reached the end of their working life.

There are also plans to make safety improvements to the intersection by installing safe speed platforms.

The intersection upgrade was consulted on earlier this year and approved by the Council in September 2023.

At this stage, we’re still working on the timing of these works and can’t yet confirm a start date. The aim is to do some of the transport work in conjunction with the stormwater work to minimise overall construction time and disruption to the area.

However, the majority of the work needs to be done separately due to traffic management needs and limited space.

The transport work will likely take about six to seven weeks to complete. We’ll update you again when we have more certainty on the timing.

Works notices

We distribute works notices and flyers to residents and businesses that are directly affected by the works in their area.
