Heathcote River - cobble cluster installation

We are adding rock cobbles to the river bed.

To improve the river ecology for fish with habitat for faster flowing water, coarser substrate and complex habitat.

Six locations from Crichton Terrace to Tennyson Street.

Work will start on 6 April 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of April 2021 (weather dependent). Work will be undertaken between Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 6:00pm. If work is required on a Saturday, it will be between 7:30am to 4:00pm.

The contractor is Phil Frame from City Care. Phone 027 228 7906 between Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 6:00pm.

What this means for you:

  • We are adding rock cobble clusters to some sections of the Heathcote River to provide desirable habitat for certain native fish species.
  • This work is unlikely to cause any major impacts as most of the work is happening along the river banks.
  • There are no road or footpath closures expected.
  • The most significant impact is there will be road shoulder closures during the works and in the case of Riverlaw Terrace near Tennyson Street a traffic contra flow will be in place.
