At various stages during construction, you will need to arrange inspections to verify that the building work has been completed in accordance with the building consent documents.

Recent changes to building inspection types

From 8 June 2018 we are merging some of our inspection types and and giving each type the same name across the Greater Canterbury Region.

This means you can book the same type of inspection in Hurunui, Waimakariri, Christchurch, Selwyn and Ashburton.

Why we made these changes

Over recent years construction sequences and practices have changed, meaning building work can now be inspected with a single visit. View a guide to the building inspection types.

This will reduce the inspection cost and time for you.

How this affects your scheduled inspections

Where there is an outstanding failed inspection of the superseded inspection types, we will need to complete these under the old inspection types.

Where your Schedule of Estimated Specified Inspections show the superseded inspection types (see example below) and no inspections have taken place, the new inspection type will need to be scheduled with our scheduling team.

Our scheduling team will be able to assist you with booking the right inspection type.

Before you book

Important things to know before you book your building inspection.

  • Ensure you have a clear timeline for your building work and book inspections in advance to avoid delays.
  • Inspections are carried out between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
  • Consent documents are required on site and available (this may include hard copy or electronically readable). An inspection may not proceed if these are not provided.
  • Log fire inspections are always in high demand. Book a log burner inspection by phoning our Inspections Support Team on (03) 941 8222  or 0800 800 169.
  • Council reserves the right, from time to time, to contact you in regard to the services provided.
  • If you wish to change or cancel your inspection, call our Inspections Support Team on (03) 941 8222. Cancellations must be made by 4pm the working day prior to your inspection. The Council charges for cancellations made on the day of  inspection.

Book a building inspection

Is this a Project Management Office (PMO) building inspection booking?
Is this a reinspection?
Morning or afternoon?
Generally inspections are carried out between 8am and 5pm. If an inspector is unavailable during this time you will be contacted to arrange another time.
Would you like 30 minutes notice via a phone call or text?
All approved consent documents must be available on site for this inspection. If the documentation is not on site during the inspection, the inspection will be failed. You will need to re-book for an additional inspection for which charges will apply.
