Work to improve the waterflow and channel capacity of the Heathcote River has begun.

Christchurch City Council contractors are working on both the Fifield and Riverlaw Terraces sections of the Heathcote as part of a scheduled river maintenance programme.

Council Land Drainage Special Projects Manager Kirsty Patten said the work would be welcomed by residents, and would give more capacity within the river channel.

“The maintenance will include sediment removal, minor bank widening and contouring, and the removal of vegetation having an impact on capacity or flow.

“It will allow the aquatic weed harvester boat further upstream.”

The work is expected to take five weeks.
